Astatine is element 85, a halogen of the p block, in group 17, period 6. Its ground-state configuration is [Xe] 4f14 5d10 6s2 6p5, and it usually shows the oxidation states -1, 0, 1.
It was discovered in 1940, by Corson,MacKenzie and Segrè.
Name origin: the Greek astatos, 'unstable'.
