Chromium is element 24, a transition metal of the d block, in group 6, period 4. Its ground-state configuration is [Ar] 3d5 4s1, and it usually shows the oxidation states 0, 2, 3, 6.
It was discovered in 1797, by Vauquelin.
Name origin: the Greek chroma, 'color'.
