Caesium is element 55, an alkali metal of the s block, in group 1, period 6. Its ground-state configuration is [Xe] 6s1, and it usually shows the oxidation states 0, 1.
It was discovered in 1860, by Kirchhoff and Bunsen.
Name origin: the Latin caesius, 'sky blue'.
