Lutetium is element 71, a lanthanoid of the d block, in group 3, period 6. Its ground-state configuration is [Xe] 4f14 5d1 6s2, and it usually shows the oxidation states 0, 3.
It was discovered in 1907, by Urbain and von Welsbach.
