Promethium is element 61, a lanthanoid of the f block, in period 6. Its ground-state configuration is [Xe] 4f5 6s2, and it usually shows the oxidation states 0, 3.
It was discovered in 1945, by Marinsky and Glendenin.
Name origin: Prometheus of Greek mythology who stole fire from the Gods and gave it to humans.
