Silicon is element 14, a metalloid of the p block, in group 14, period 3. Its ground-state configuration is [Ne] 3s2 3p2, and it usually shows the oxidation states -4, 0, 4.
It was discovered in 1824, by Berzelius.
Name origin: from the Latin silex, 'flint' (originally silicium).
