Tantalum is element 73, a transition metal of the d block, in group 5, period 6. Its ground-state configuration is [Xe] 4f14 5d3 6s2, and it usually shows the oxidation states 0, 5.
It was discovered in 1802, by Ekeberg.
Name origin: King Tantalus, father of Niobe from Greek mythology.
