Tungsten is element 74, a transition metal of the d block, in group 6, period 6. Its ground-state configuration is [Xe] 4f14 5d4 6s2, and it usually shows the oxidation states 0, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.
It was discovered in 1783, by Fausto de Elhúyar and Juan José de Elhúyar.
Name origin: the Swedish tung sten, 'heavy stone' (W is wolfram, the old name of the tungsten mineral wolframite).
