Zirconium is element 40, a transition metal of the d block, in group 4, period 5. Its ground-state configuration is [Kr] 4d2 5s2, and it usually shows the oxidation states 0, 4.
It was discovered in 1789, by Klaproth.
Name origin: German Zirkon, 'jargoon' (a variety of zircon).
